Three ways to track time on a Mac

Use the browser for the full Timen app, or add a timer where you work. All three options record time in the same account.

The full app

Timen in Safari, Chrome or Firefox

Timer, calendar, reports, invoices, clients, projects and your team, in a browser tab. Nothing to install and nothing to update.

In the menu bar

TimenBar, a community-built menu bar timer

Start and stop the timer with one click at the top of the screen, see your week and fix an entry without opening a tab. Open source, from a Timen user.

In the browser

The Timen browser extension

A start button on the task, issue or ticket you have open in Chrome, Firefox or Edge, in over a hundred tools. The entry takes the task's title with it.

The web app

Why is there nothing to download?

Because the whole of Timen runs in the browser your Mac already has. Open app.gettimen.com, start the timer, and the entry is saved as you go.

Forgot to start it? Add the hours afterwards, or click the gap on the calendar and fill it in. Each entry takes a project, a client, tags and a billable flag, and your recent entries sit under the timer with the day's and the week's totals.

The same page works on a Windows or Linux machine, and the iPhone and Android apps share the account, so your hours are the same wherever you look.

TimenBar

What does the menu bar timer do?

TimenBar keeps the running timer visible in your menu bar. Start or stop it, resume a recent task and review the week without switching to a browser tab.

Walk away with a timer running and after ten minutes without a keypress it asks whether to keep the time, trim it or carry on. It only asks macOS how long you have been idle; it has no idea what you were doing.

TimenBar is built and maintained by Eric Carmichael at CKCollab, a Timen user, and is open source under the MIT licence. It requires macOS 14 Sonoma or newer. Download TimenBar or read the setup guide.

Browser extension

Can the timer start from the task itself?

Yes, in Chrome, Firefox and Chromium browsers such as Edge. The extension puts a start button on the task, issue or ticket you have open in Jira, GitHub, Asana, Trello, Notion, ClickUp and over a hundred other tools, and the entry takes the task's title and project with it.

Each tool stays off until you switch it on, and the extension does not run on any site you have not enabled. There is no Safari build yet, so Safari users get the timer from the web app or from TimenBar.

What happens to the hours after you stop the timer

Use the recorded hours to report on work, prepare an invoice or continue a project you tracked in another app.

Reports by project, client and person

Filter a date range by project, client, person, tag or billable status, read the summary or every entry behind it, and export it as CSV or PDF.

Invoices from the tracked hours

Build an invoice from a report and download a PDF or send it to an accounting system. Invoice help explains the destinations and their limits.

Your old hours, imported

Bring your history over from Toggl Track, Harvest, Clockify, Timely, Hubstaff or Jibble, so the reports start with everything you have tracked.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work offline?

The web app needs a connection. TimenBar shows your week offline, but starting, stopping and editing wait until you are back online. The iPhone and Android apps track offline and sync afterwards.

Does it watch what I do on the Mac?

No. Timen records the time you tell it to record. There are no screenshots, no app or website logs and no activity scores. TimenBar's idle prompt only asks macOS how long it has been since your last keypress or mouse move, and needs no accessibility permission.

Is there a Safari extension?

Not yet. The extension runs in Chrome, Firefox and Chromium browsers such as Edge. In Safari, use the web app or TimenBar.
