Is the extension free?
Yes. The extension is free and so is Timen, for your whole team.
Which browsers does it work in?
Chrome, Firefox, and Chromium browsers like Microsoft Edge. The Firefox add-on needs Firefox 140 or later on desktop; there is no Firefox for Android build, and no Safari build yet.
Is the Firefox add-on the same as the Chrome extension?
Yes. Both offer the same timer, editing tools, and integrations, and work with the same free Timen account.
Which tools does it work with?
Over a hundred, including Jira, GitHub, GitLab, Asana, Trello, Notion, ClickUp, Basecamp, Todoist, Zendesk, Wrike and Teamwork. The full list is searchable inside the extension, and you switch on the ones your team uses.
Do I need a Timen account?
Yes, and creating one is free. The extension starts timers in your Timen account, so your hours sit alongside everything else your team tracks.
Can it read every website I visit?
No. It installs with permission for Timen's own domain and nothing else. Every tool in the list is off until you switch it on, and your browser asks you to approve that specific site. On a site you have not turned on, the extension does not run, does not read the page and does not know you are there.
What does it take from a task page?
The title of the task, issue, card or document you are looking at, and where the tool shows them, a project or client name and any labels. That becomes the description and attributes of the time entry, and only once you start the timer.
Can I change the entry after starting it?
Yes. An editor opens next to the button as soon as the timer starts, so you can rewrite the description, switch the project, add or remove tags and mark the entry billable without leaving the page. You can also edit it later from Timen like any other entry.
Is there a keyboard shortcut?
Ctrl+Shift+E starts and stops the timer without opening the popup. It picks up your most recent entry, so continuing yesterday's work is one keystroke.
We run a self-hosted tool. Will the button appear?
Yes. Add your own address under Custom domains in the extension's settings and point it at the matching integration. A self-hosted GitLab, Jira or Redmine then behaves the same as the hosted one.
Where is my data stored, and what happens when I sign out?
On your own device, in the browser's extension storage: your session, a cached copy of your projects, clients and tags, the running entry and your settings. Signing out clears it and uninstalling removes it.
Do the hours show up in reports and invoices?
Yes. An entry started from the extension is an ordinary Timen entry, so it appears in your timer and calendar, counts towards your reports, and can be invoiced like hours tracked anywhere else.
